8 Best Directorist Alternatives in 2026
Compared on what earns money without another license, what the AI really does, the cost of a year, and who keeps the site patched.

Directorist's free core is generous: unlimited listings, custom fields, CSV import, and 4.6 out of 5 from 698 WordPress.org reviews on 25 October 2026. Money is another matter: pricing plans, featured spots, claims and bookings need a paid plan ($129 a year at list price for one site) or a separate extension, with the PayPal gateway the free exception. One owner who bought two extensions to sell single featured upgrades wrote in August 2026: "Neither extension supports it." Directorist refunded them.
Our pick: LocusPilot Directory Builder is the best Directorist alternative for a local-business directory that earns from leads and featured slots, because it adds the businesses and writes each listing's review analysis for you. HivePress and Business Directory Plugin are the cheapest way to keep charging listing fees on WordPress. If listing owners pay you through the site, or you need more than 1,000 listings, LocusPilot is the wrong tool.
What matters when you leave Directorist?
Five things decide the move off Directorist: which money features work without another license, what the AI really does, the first-year cost, who keeps the site updated, and what you keep if you leave.
- Which money features work without buying another license: paid listings, featured spots, claims, or leads?
- Does the AI add businesses and write pages, or only set up fields?
- What does the first year cost once extensions are counted, before hosting?
- Who applies updates and security patches, and who answers when an update breaks something?
- What do you keep if you leave?

1. LocusPilot Directory Builder
LocusPilot Directory Builder swaps the plugin stack for a short form. You choose a niche from 4,274 Google Business categories and a city, name the directory and pick one of four design presets, and the engine finds the businesses itself.
Directorist's AI sets up fields and, through its AI Search extension, improves search. LocusPilot's AI writes the pages, and you can edit them. Each listing gets an analysis of its recent reviews: what customers praise, what to watch for, and who the business suits. Directories with enough businesses also get best-of pages, comparisons and a guide library under a byline you create (a persona, not a real person), and a page that would be thin is never built.
- Businesses found for you in any of 4,274 Google Business categories, with no CSV or API billing
- Review analysis on every listing, ranked on a published methodology that weights sentiment 28% by default
- Featured placement that is labeled, capped and kept out of the earned ranking, plus category exclusivity, banners and sponsored guides
- Hosting, updates, the lead inbox and click tracking come with the subscription

Not for: directories where listing owners pay you on the site, user-submitted classifieds, more than 1,000 listings, or languages other than English. Directories cannot be exported, and with no refunds a test costs at least one month of the plan.
Why directory operators choose LocusPilot
This is great btw you are already way ahead of my other directory its crazy.
TTrajah B., LocusPilot customer
- A cafe directory we built with LocusPilot and run ourselves had 5,230 clicks and 801,035 impressions in Google Search Console from 5 July to 24 October 2026, average position 7.4. One directory's record, not a forecast for yours.
- The Opportunities tab lists your directory's businesses with no website, a weak site or an expired domain: on a 532-listing landscaper directory in Central Texas, 133 had no website and 45 had dead sites.
- Check the output first: Denver Veterinarian has 184 listings and cost about 23 credits to build.
LocusPilot vs Directorist
| Feature | LocusPilot | Directorist |
|---|---|---|
| Price for one directory | $29/mo on Operator ($348 a year); first build uses no credits (once per account) | Free core; $129/yr list for one site with every extension ($116 on sale, 25 October 2026), or $379 lifetimewins |
| Getting businesses in | The engine finds them from a niche and a citywins | CSV import free; Google Maps importer needs your own Places API billing, 60 listings per run |
| What the AI does | Writes review analysis per listing, best-of pages and guideswins | Setup wizard builds structure and fields; AI Search extension adds semantic search; neither writes listing content, per its pages |
| Taking money | Featured slots, exclusivity and banners, invoiced by you off the site | Paid listings, featured spots, subscriptions, claim fees and Pay Per Lead, with Stripe, PayPal and Authorize.net, on a paid planwins |
| Leads | Quote form on every listing, inbox, call and WhatsApp tracking | Owner contact form in the free core; Pay Per Lead extension |
| Hosting and updates | Included; nothing to patchwins | Your WordPress host; you test and apply updates |
| Size limit | Up to 1,000 listings per directory | No listing capwins |
| If you leave | The directory cannot be exported | Your WordPress data stays; extensions keep working without updateswins |
Directorist wins on price, on-site payments, listing count and what you keep. LocusPilot wins on the work it takes off your plate: finding the businesses, writing the analysis, and running hosting and updates. Directories need a paid plan from $29 a month; the first build uses no credits (once per account), and there are no refunds.
2. GeoDirectory
GeoDirectory is AyeCode's WordPress directory plugin and the closest like-for-like move from Directorist: self-hosted, any theme. AyeCode offers a free beta add-on, Directory Converter, that converts Directorist directories to GeoDirectory, with a warning not to run it on a live site.
Money features are add-ons here too. Pricing Manager handles paid and recurring listing packages from $49 a year, Claim Listings starts at $49, and Pay Per Lead makes owners pay to unlock an enquiry. The membership with every add-on is $139 a year for one site or $229 for unlimited sites.
Strengths
- Free Directory Converter for Directorist sites, in beta
- Pay Per Lead, advertising and paid claims available as add-ons
- Every add-on on unlimited sites for $229 a year
- Add-ons keep working after a membership ends
Watch out for
- The free core covers one city; more cities need Location Manager
- Recurring fees through WooCommerce need the paid WooCommerce Subscriptions plugin
- No AI writing named on the vendor pages checked on 25 October 2026
Pick GeoDirectory if you want to stay on WordPress and bring your Directorist listings with you, and read our GeoDirectory alternatives comparison before committing.
3. Business Directory Plugin
Business Directory Plugin is Strategy11's WordPress plugin. Its free version already takes money: free or paid listing plans, one-time or recurring, with featured and sticky placement as paid upgrades. Payments run through Stripe, with a 3% plugin fee on top of Stripe's own fees unless you hold an active Pro or Elite license, or Authorize.net, with no Strategy11 fee (the gateway's own charges apply). Listings come in by CSV or by hand, with no cap.
The paid plans are priced as first-year offers. Basic is $99 a year with ratings and PayPal, Pro is $149 for Google Maps, ZIP search and no Stripe plugin fee on three sites, and Elite is $249 for claim listings on 25 sites. Renewals are at full price: $149, $249 and $349.
Strengths
- Paid and recurring listing plans in the free version
- No Strategy11 fee on Authorize.net; the gateway's own charges apply
- Listings stay as WordPress posts if the plugin is removed
- No listing cap on any plan
Watch out for
- Stripe adds 3% on Lite, Basic and expired licenses; only Pro or Elite removes it
- Claim listings only on Elite: $249 in the first year, $349 after
- Maps and ZIP search start at Pro; no AI or Maps import named (vendor pages, 25 October 2026)
Pick Business Directory Plugin if charging listing owners is the whole model and you want to start without buying a license; we weigh its rivals for paid listings on a separate page.
4. HivePress
HivePress is a free WordPress plugin for listing and marketplace sites, made by HiveApps. The free version can charge for new listings, featured spots and claims, with WooCommerce handling the checkout and its gateways. Reviews, messages and geolocation are free add-ons.
Paid add-ons cost $29 to $39 each as lifetime single-site licenses, or $99 a year for all of them ($199 for unlimited sites). CSV import and the SEO add-on that maps listings to schema cost $29 each. Recurring membership dues need the $39 Memberships add-on plus WooCommerce Subscriptions. Custom layouts need CSS or PHP.
Strengths
- Charges for listings, featured spots and claims in the free version
- One-time licenses for single add-ons, from $29
- Support from its own developers, with a stated 24-hour turnaround
- Free directory theme, ListingHive
Watch out for
- WooCommerce runs every payment, so you set it up and keep it updated
- CSV import and schema controls are $29 add-ons
- No Maps import or AI writing named on its pages (25 October 2026)
Pick HivePress if you want to keep charging for listings and claims on WordPress with the smallest license bill.
5. Brilliant Directories
Brilliant Directories is a hosted directory platform, so there is no WordPress install, plugin update or server to manage. Payments come with the plan rather than as an extension: Stripe, PayPal and Authorize.net, recurring billing, banner ads and featured-listing upsells, with $0 platform fees.
Brilliant Directories sells a $97 monthly plan and a $997 lifetime plan that a 25 October 2026 banner said was ending that week. The monthly plan includes 100 business records with AI-written descriptions; LocusPilot writes from each business's reviews instead. All 75+ premium add-ons cost $95 a month, and AI crawlers need the $15-a-month Enhanced Hosting Bundle. Our Brilliant Directories alternatives page goes deeper.
Strengths
- Payments and recurring billing built in
- Hosting, email and software updates included
- Member accounts for up to 100,000 members
- White-labeled site and admin panel
Watch out for
- Claimable listings and lead pricing are premium add-ons; all add-ons cost $95/mo
- AI crawlers are blocked on the free hosting; allowing them is $15/mo
- One site per plan
Pick Brilliant Directories if you want payments and member plans on the site without running WordPress yourself.
6. MyListing
MyListing is a WordPress directory theme from 27collective, sold on ThemeForest. Its strength is listing types: places, events, cars and property on one site, each with its own fields, search form and page layout. Paid listing packages, promotions and claims run through WooCommerce, which the theme requires along with Elementor.
A Regular license costs $119 once on ThemeForest (25 October 2026), with 6 months of support and future updates. Envato says a site that charges users to use the item's features needs the $1,199 Extended license; how that applies to paid listings is not stated, so ask first. Its AI is Elementor's Angie, which manages listings, listing types and settings by chat through a free MCP plugin, an Elementor account and Angie's own limits.
Strengths
- Unlimited listing types, each with its own fields and search
- Promotion packages that push listings up the results
- Six releases in 2026, the latest on 26 September
- Updates included with the one-time license
Watch out for
- A paid-listing site may need the $1,199 Extended license
- Support ends after 6 months unless you extend it
- No free version; recurring plans need WooCommerce Subscriptions
Pick MyListing if your directory mixes several kinds of listing and each one needs its own fields and search; our MyListing alternatives guide covers the license question in more depth.
7. ListingPro
ListingPro is a WordPress directory theme with its own bundled plugins, made by Cridio Studio and sold on ThemeForest for $69. Its own checkout, not WooCommerce, handles paid plans, paid claims and ad campaigns, with Stripe, PayPal Express, 2Checkout and bank transfer built in. Each listing has a lead form that feeds the owner's inbox.
The $69 covers one finished directory site and 6 months of support. ThemeForest sells ListingPro only under the Regular License, which covers end products "which end users are not charged for"; the vendor does not say whether paid listings count, so ask before charging. Releases since April 2025 list security and bug fixes and no new features or AI; the latest is 2.9.12 on 19 August 2026. ListingPro replaces your theme, so leaving means rebuilding the site.
Strengths
- Own checkout for paid plans, paid claims and ads
- Lead form on every listing, with an owner inbox
- Booking, events, deals and menus built in
- $69 once for the theme and its plugins
Watch out for
- No new features listed since April 2025; latest release 19 August 2026
- Sold only under the Regular License; ask the vendor before charging listing owners
- One license per directory site, with 6 months of support
Pick ListingPro if you want paid plans, claims and ads working from one theme purchase, after checking the license terms and the other themes ListingPro owners compare.
8. Softr
Softr is a hosted no-code app builder. The reviewed resource-directory template targets internal teams. You keep the records in Softr Databases, Airtable or Google Sheets and build pages with logins and permissions on top. One Directorist reviewer runs the plugin as an internal directory, and for that kind of list Softr is the simpler tool.
Softr is free up to 1,000 records in one database (5,000 across all of them). Your own domain starts on Basic ($25 monthly, $228 yearly), and dropping the Softr badge takes Pro ($119 monthly, $1,188 yearly). We did not verify native equivalents to Directorist's paid-listing, claim and review workflows.
Strengths
- Logins, permissions and hosting built in
- Data in Airtable, Google Sheets or Softr Databases
- Free plan for up to 1,000 records per database
- 50% off for nonprofits and education
Watch out for
- No paid listings, claims or listing reviews named on its pages (25 October 2026)
- Custom domain from Basic; branding removal needs Pro at $119/mo
- Reviewed templates target internal or partner directories; no Maps importer named
Pick Softr if your directory is for staff, members or partners and does not need to earn from listings.
What does a year of each tool cost for one directory?
Examples for one directory: $0 on the free WordPress cores before hosting, LocusPilot's $348 subscription baseline, and $1,164 for Brilliant Directories billed monthly. The scenario: one public directory on a custom domain that can sell paid listings or featured slots, in USD from vendor pages on 25 October 2026. Bundles, subscriptions and one-time licenses are not like for like.
| Tool | First year, one directory | What that buys |
|---|---|---|
| LocusPilot | $348 subscription baseline (Operator, $29 billed monthly) | Hosting, lead inbox, 30 credits a month; first build uses no credits (once per account), then 15 per 100-listing build and 5 per monthly refresh; each added city 2 credits plus 0.1 per estimated listing |
| Directorist | $129 list ($116 on sale, 25 October 2026), or $379 lifetime, plus hosting | Every extension and theme for one site; annual: a year of support and updates, lifetime: lifetime support and updates; 14-day money-back on annual plans |
| GeoDirectory | $139, plus hosting | Every add-on for one site, including Location Manager and Pricing Manager |
| Business Directory Plugin | $0 with a 3% plugin fee on Stripe, or $99 / $149 / $249 first year (the fee ends on Pro and Elite), plus hosting | Renewals at $149 / $249 / $349; claim listings on Elite only |
| HivePress | $0, or $99 for every add-on, plus hosting | WooCommerce handles payments; unlimited sites $199 |
| Brilliant Directories | $1,164 ($97 a month), or $997 lifetime while it is sold | Hosting and payments included; free demo with no card; AI crawler access $15 a month more; all add-ons $95 a month more |
| MyListing | $119 once (Regular license) or $1,199 (Extended), plus hosting | 6 months of support; recurring plans need WooCommerce Subscriptions |
| ListingPro | $69 once (Regular license only; ask before charging listing owners), plus hosting | Theme and bundled plugins, 6 months of support |
| Softr | $228 (Basic, billed yearly) or $1,188 (Pro) | Custom domain on Basic, branding removal on Pro; directory money features not named |
Refresh costs 0.05 credits per listing per cycle, so a monthly refresh of 1,000 listings needs 50 credits, more than Operator's 30: Growth's 100 covers it, or top-ups from $0.85 a credit. On the WordPress side, imports bring listings in, but hosting, descriptions, guides and upkeep stay with you.
How do you move a directory off Directorist?
Keep the old site running until the new one is checked.
- Export your listings with Directorist's free CSV export before changing anything; it keeps custom fields.
- Note what the directory earns from today and which URLs bring search traffic.
- To stay on WordPress, try GeoDirectory's free Directory Converter on a staging copy, never the live site, or import the CSV into the new plugin.
- LocusPilot builds a new directory from public business data. Nothing is imported, so owner accounts, paid plans and custom fields stay behind.
- Before cutover, compare the new directory's businesses and pages with the old site's and test the forms. LocusPilot has not published redirect controls for old URLs; keep the old site live on its own address or ask before you move the domain.
When should you stay with Directorist?
Keep Directorist when listing owners pay you on the site and its payment extensions fit your setup. It has no listing cap: one reviewer runs "over 19,000 listings" on it (WordPress.org, November 2025).
Stay too if the directory is not in English, runs on user submissions, or sits on a paid-up lifetime license that works. Its support has fans too: an April 2026 reviewer wrote that when a problem was over their head, "they went directly to my site. And did it for me."
