LocusPilot vs WordPress directory plugins (2026): built for you or by you?

LocusPilot builds the directory and keeps it current for you, from $29 a month, but you cannot export it or take payments on it. A WordPress directory plugin is free to start and yours to own, but you build, fill and maintain it.

LocusPilot Directory Builder is a hosted service that turns a niche and a city into a working local-business directory, with the listings loaded, a review analysis written for each one and lead capture built in, from $29 a month; it cannot be exported and stops if the subscription ends. LocusPilot is our product.

A WordPress directory plugin such as GeoDirectory, Directorist, HivePress or Business Directory Plugin turns a WordPress site you host into a directory: free to start, yours to keep, and yours to fill, write and maintain. The choice comes down to whether you want to run WordPress, and whether the site should take payments itself.

Pick LocusPilot ifyou want the directory built and kept current for you, with no WordPress to host or update, and you earn from the leads it captures.
Pick a WordPress directory plugin ifyou want to own the site, charge businesses on it and shape every page, and you are happy to run WordPress yourself.
  • LocusPilot is for operators who want directories built and kept current for them, earning from leads and featured slots sold to local businesses.
  • WordPress directory plugin is for builders who are happy to run WordPress and want to own the site, charge businesses on it and shape every page.
  • LocusPilot cannot take payments on the site, cannot import a plugin's listings, writes directories in English only for now, and a LocusPilot directory cannot be exported or self-hosted.

Where each one wins

Where LocusPilot wins

  • The directory gets built for you.LocusPilot's directory builder pulls the businesses for your niche and city, reads their recent reviews and writes a review analysis for each listing, plus guides and best-of pages. On the plugin route you import a CSV or, with Directorist's paid importer and your own Google key, Google's descriptions and reviews; the rest is written by you or the owners.
  • There is no WordPress to run.Hosting, updates and security come with the plan. On the plugin route they are yours: "I've got four months into my site so far and I'm still learning," one GeoDirectory builder wrote on Reddit in March 2024.
  • The listings stay current on their own. Each refresh cycle (monthly by default) removes closed businesses and dead websites and shows a last-verified date on every listing; a 100-listing directory refreshes for 5 credits. Plugins can re-sync imported details with paid importers, but none of the four names a check for businesses that have closed.
  • It is set up for leads and to be found.Every listing has a quote form, and calls, WhatsApp taps and website clicks are tracked. Each directory ships a full schema graph and an llms.txt file, and hub and city pages are only built once enough real businesses exist, so thin pages never go live.

Where a WordPress directory plugin wins

  • It is yours. The files and the database sit on your hosting. GeoDirectory and Directorist say their plugins keep working if a licence lapses, with only updates and support stopping; Business Directory Plugin documents that support, updates and new add-ons stop. A LocusPilot directory cannot be exported and stops with the subscription.
  • It costs less to start. All four plugins have free cores on WordPress.org, and two of them, Business Directory Plugin and HivePress, can charge for listings without a paid plan. You pay for hosting on top, which varies with the host and the traffic.
  • It does more on the site.Owners can submit and claim their listings, the site can take payments, any WordPress theme works, and page builders are supported to varying degrees. Plugins also cover what LocusPilot does not: multilingual directories through WPML, bookings and events add-ons, SEO plugins such as Yoast or Rank Math, and more than LocusPilot's 1,000 listings per directory (GeoDirectory says its custom tables handle millions).

What does year one cost?

One directory costs $348 a year on LocusPilot and from $0 a year plus hosting with a free plugin core, at list prices checked on 25 October 2026. WordPress hosting varies with the host and the traffic, so it is shown as "+ hosting" rather than guessed.

ScenarioLocusPilotWordPress directory pluginHow we got it
One directory$348 a year$0 a year + hostingLocusPilot: $29 × 12, hosting included; the 30 monthly credits cover refreshes of up to 600 listings a month in total. WordPress directory plugin: a free core; to charge for listings, Business Directory Plugin and HivePress need nothing more, GeoDirectory's Pricing Manager is $49 a year, Directorist's Starter $129 a year list.
Three directories$372 a year$0 a year + hosting × 3LocusPilot: $29 × 12 + $2 × 12, hosting included; the 30 monthly credits are shared, so up to 600 listings in total refreshed monthly before top-ups. WordPress directory plugin: three free cores; with paid features, Directorist Pro (5 sites) is $169 a year list ($135 on sale on 25 October 2026) and GeoDirectory's every-add-on membership $229 a year for unlimited sites.

LocusPilot's $348 covers monthly refreshes of up to 600 listings; a 1,000-listing directory refreshed monthly needs 50 credits, so 20 more a month from top-ups at $0.85 a credit or a larger plan. The first build uses no credits. The plugin route's real cost is mostly time: installing, filling and updating, which the table cannot price.

Who should pick which?

Lead-gen operator who does not want to run WordPress

You want directories that load their own businesses, stay current and capture leads you sell to local businesses, without hosting, updates or writing listings.

PickLocusPilot

WordPress builder who wants to own the site

You already run WordPress or want to learn it, and you want your own database, any theme and businesses paying for listings on the site.

PickWordPress directory plugin

A large or multi-region directory

You expect more than 1,000 listings or cities across several states, and you can manage the hosting that scale needs.

PickWordPress directory plugin

Moving from a WordPress plugin to LocusPilot

LocusPilot cannot import your plugin's listings. It builds a new directory for the same niche and city from Google Business data, so plan for what you keep and what you rebuild. Look through a live demo directory before you pay.

Carries over

  • Your niche, city and brand
  • Your domain, once a redirect plan for the old URLs is ready
  • Your WordPress site, database and CSV export, which stay yours

Rebuilt or dropped

  • Listings: LocusPilot collects them again from Google Business data, so businesses not on Google, or beyond 1,000 listings or one state, will not come across
  • Reviews, photos and custom fields stored in the plugin
  • Owner accounts, claims, messages and anything businesses paid for
  • Hand-written pages, blog posts and your theme's design
  • Page addresses: old WordPress URLs will not match unless the paths happen to agree
  1. Export your listings to CSV and take a full backup of the WordPress site. Keep both; LocusPilot will not read them.
  2. Mark the listings that will not come across: businesses owners added that are not on Google Business, and anything past 1,000 listings or outside one state. Their pages will have no replacement.
  3. List the pages that get search traffic or backlinks (Search Console shows them) and compare them with the new directory's addresses.
  4. Build the LocusPilot directory for the same niche and city. The wizard shows the credit price first; your first build uses no credits. Switch off any listing you do not want shown.
  5. Tell businesses that pay for listings what changes, cancel their recurring payments in your payment plugin, and agree any featured placement afresh, invoiced by you.
  6. Keep the WordPress site and the domain serving your existing URLs until you have a tested plan for them; that means keeping its hosting during the overlap. LocusPilot has not published redirect controls for old URLs, so ask before you move the domain, and keep the WordPress backup in case you need to roll back.
How we checked: Product and price facts come from the vendors' own pages: GeoDirectory's, Directorist's, HivePress's and Business Directory Plugin's saved on 25 October 2026, LocusPilot's on 25 October 2026, plus two answers from LocusPilot's owner on export and import. The plugin column summarises those four, the plugins AI answers named when we asked about this choice; other plugins differ in places. The customer quote is a dated Reddit comment, one builder's experience. A row's winner is the better option for someone starting one directory at the entry price. LocusPilot is our product; we did not install the plugins for this page.

Frequently asked questions

Is a WordPress directory plugin cheaper than LocusPilot?
The software is: GeoDirectory, Directorist, HivePress and Business Directory Plugin all have free cores, while LocusPilot's Operator plan is $29 a month with hosting included (prices checked 25 October 2026). Whether the whole plugin route costs less depends on your hosting, which we have not priced. Business Directory Plugin and HivePress can charge for listings in their free cores; GeoDirectory and Directorist need a paid add-on or plan.
Can LocusPilot import listings from my WordPress directory plugin?
No. LocusPilot builds each directory from Google Business data for your niche and city and does not read a plugin's CSV export. Keep your export and backup if you move.
Is a WordPress plugin or LocusPilot better for SEO?
A WordPress plugin gives you more SEO control; LocusPilot does more of the SEO work for you, and neither guarantees rankings. Plugins work with SEO plugins such as Yoast or Rank Math, and Directorist has schema built in. LocusPilot builds a schema graph, an llms.txt file and a published ranking method into every directory, and skips hub and city pages that would be thin.
Do I need to know WordPress to run a directory plugin?
Yes, or pay someone who does. You install WordPress, a theme and the plugin on your own hosting, configure them and keep them updated. LocusPilot needs none of that.
Can LocusPilot take payments for listings like a plugin can?
No. LocusPilot sells featured placement, banners and sponsored guides as products you invoice yourself and never handles the money. Business Directory Plugin and HivePress take payments in their free cores, and GeoDirectory and Directorist through a paid add-on or plan.
Can I export a LocusPilot directory?
No. A LocusPilot directory runs on LocusPilot infrastructure and cannot be downloaded or self-hosted. If the subscription ends the directory is suspended; you can still view the leads it captured, but not export the listings.
How many listings can each one handle?
A LocusPilot directory holds up to 1,000 listings across up to 15 cities in one state; a second state means a second directory. Directorist and Business Directory Plugin state no listing cap, and GeoDirectory says its custom tables handle millions of listings, given hosting to match.
