Source: LocusPilot scan of 500 local business sites listed in LocusPilot directories and 121 live sites built with LocusPilot. A site has an llms.txt when /llms.txt returns a Markdown file, including one a site builder wrote for it. It blocks an AI crawler when its robots.txt stops GPTBot, ClaudeBot or another AI bot on our list from reading the home page. Last checked: November 2026.

How to use it

  1. Type your home page address. The other two boxes are optional: a business name, if it should differ from the one on your site, and one line on what you do for the AI to work from.
  2. Click Make my llms.txt. We read your robots.txt, your sitemap and up to 50 pages, which takes 10 to 45 seconds.
  3. Read every line and fix anything a customer would call wrong. Then upload the file so it opens at yoursite.com/llms.txt. The steps for your platform are below.

Where to put it

WordPress
  1. If Yoast SEO's llms.txt feature is on, turn it off (Yoast SEO, then Settings, then Site features, then the LLMS.txt switch under AI tools). Yoast leaves a file it did not write alone, but one source for the file is easier to keep right.
  2. Open your host's file manager, or connect by SFTP, and go to the folder that holds wp-admin and wp-content, usually public_html.
  3. Upload llms.txt to that folder, then open yoursite.com/llms.txt to check it loads.
Wix
  1. Wix writes its own llms.txt once the site is on a paid plan, has a connected domain and is open to search engines. A free Wix site cannot have one. You replace its text with yours.
  2. In the dashboard, go to SEO & GEO, scroll to Tools and settings, then click Go to llms.txt.
  3. Click More Actions, then Edit file, then Continue. Paste your file over the text and click Save Changes. Wix stops updating the file after you edit it.
Squarespace
  1. This works on version 7.1 sites only.
  2. Open the SEO/AI Visibility panel, click SEO Settings, then open the LLMS.txt tab.
  3. Paste the whole file into the text field and save. The file stays off until that field has text in it.
Shopify
  1. Shopify already serves an /llms.txt that copies your store's /agents.md. Open yourstore.com/llms.txt first and decide whether yours is better.
  2. Go to Online Store, then Themes, then Edit code on your live theme.
  3. In the templates folder, add a file named llms.txt.liquid, paste your file into it and save.
Static sites
  1. Save the file as llms.txt in the folder your site is served from, for example public/ in an Astro or Next.js project.
  2. Deploy as you normally do.
  3. Open yoursite.com/llms.txt and check you see plain text, not your 404 page.

Common questions

A short Markdown file at /llms.txt on your site that lists your most useful pages, each with a one-line note. An AI assistant or agent can read it to learn what the business does and which pages to open first. The format is set out at llmstxt.org.
It reads your robots.txt and sitemap, or the links on your home page if there is no sitemap. Then it reads up to 50 pages and takes each page's title, meta description and first heading. With a big sitemap, it starts with the home page and the shortest addresses. It skips pages marked noindex or blocked by your robots.txt, and anything that does not load as a normal web page. The AI sorts the pages into sections and writes a one-sentence summary. Each page description is 12 words or fewer, and archive and legal pages go in a final Optional section. Code then checks every link against the pages we read, so an answer with a made-up address is thrown out.
No. Google's AI optimization guide (last updated 10 July 2026) says Google Search ignores llms.txt files, so one will not help or hurt your rankings there. Make one for the AI assistants and agents that do look for it. If Google is the only place you care about, you can skip it.
Open yoursite.com/llms.txt and read what is there. Wix writes one for paid sites with a connected domain. Shopify serves a copy of your agents.md. Yoast SEO on WordPress lists the 5 pages and the 5 posts you updated last, and leaves out posts published more than a year ago. Squarespace 7.1 gives you an empty field to fill in. If the file you have already describes your business well, keep it. If it is thin, paste this one over it. It changes nothing. It only reads public pages, and you upload the file yourself. It identifies itself as LocusPilotFreeTools and obeys your robots.txt, so a Disallow rule for that name stops it reading your pages.
You get the basic file, built straight from your page titles and descriptions, when the AI step fails or runs out of time, when both of its answers fail our checks, or when the tool's shared AI budget for the day is used up. It is still a valid llms.txt. When your site is too slow to read in time, the file lists your pages by address only. Neither kind is kept as your saved result, so running the tool again later tries for the full version.
