How to use it

  1. Pick a type, or tick Free listing only to hide the sites that charge for a listing.
  2. Read the Notes column before you sign up. It gives the catch where there is one, such as Yelp, which may show your page as unclaimed again if nobody logs in to your Yelp for Business account for 90 days.
  3. Copy the rows you filtered as CSV or download them, then mark each site off in your spreadsheet once its listing is live.

Common questions

Any page on a site you do not own that shows your business name with your address or phone number. A Yelp page is one, and so is a doctor's Healthgrades profile.
We loaded each site's listing or sign-up page, saved a copy, and kept the site only if that page showed a US local business can add or claim a listing and said whether it costs anything. Sites that showed only a sign-in screen, or would not load for us, stayed off. Waze is the one exception on price: its help page names no price, but you add your place as a map edit in the Waze app, with no business account and no payment step, and volunteer map editors review it. The date above the table is when we last did this.
Their pages did not let us confirm the basics. Bing Places showed us only a sign-in screen, and the Yellow Pages and OpenTable sign-up pages would not load for us on any attempt. Foursquare's claim page does not say whether claiming costs anything, and Porch's page talks about paid leads without saying what the profile costs. Leaving a site off is not a verdict on it: any of them can go on the list once its own page shows who can join and what a listing costs.
No. For every site but Waze, it means the site's own page says you can create or claim the listing without paying. Some of these sites charge for other things: Thumbtack charges for leads, and Zocdoc charges a booking fee each time it finds you a new patient.
At our last check: MapQuest needs a MapQuest for Business plan, $12.50 a month billed yearly, before you can claim or edit your listing, though reporting wrong details on it is still free. TransUnion Digital Business Profile (Neustar Localeze) is paid only, at $99 a year per location for 1 to 24 locations. Tick Free listing only to hide them.
Your business details written once, exactly as they should appear everywhere, so you paste the same text into every form. Request your D-U-N-S Number early: it is free, but Dun & Bradstreet says normal processing can take up to 30 business days. Lawyers and doctors need one more thing. Avvo finds you by your name as it appears on your state bar registration, and Healthgrades verifies providers with a DEA or state license number.
