LocusPilot Directory Builder is a hosted tool that builds a local-business directory from a niche and a city, writes a review analysis for each listing and captures leads, from $29 a month; a directory runs only while the subscription is active and cannot be exported. LocusPilot is our product.

Brilliant Directories is a different kind of product: a hosted membership platform where businesses register, manage their own profiles and pay through the site, while you run the members, plans and billing. LocusPilot builds the directory and keeps it current for you; it earns from the leads it captures, which you sell to the businesses listed. The choice comes down to which of those two businesses you want to run.

Pick LocusPilot ifyou want the directory built and kept current for you, and you earn by selling its leads and featured slots to local businesses.
Pick Brilliant Directories ifbusinesses will register, keep their own listings up to date and pay you through the site, for membership, placement or leads.
  • LocusPilot is for operators who want directories built and kept current for them, earning from leads and featured slots sold to local businesses.
  • Brilliant Directories is for directories where businesses join as members and pay through the site.
  • LocusPilot cannot take payments on the site, and a LocusPilot directory cannot be exported or self-hosted.

Where each one wins

Where LocusPilot wins

  • The directory gets written for you.Pick a category and a city, and LocusPilot's directory builder pulls the businesses, reads their recent reviews and writes a review analysis for each listing, plus guides and best-of pages. Brilliant Directories also loads businesses for you, each with an AI-written description, and its AI page generator has 30 credits a month.
  • There is little to set up.A short form (category, city, brand, design) builds the whole directory, with nothing to configure first. On Brilliant Directories you set up the site and its pages in the admin panel; the lifetime plan adds a free initial setup. "You have to put in a lot of time to learn their platform," one Brilliant Directories user wrote on Reddit in June 2025.
  • The listings stay current on their own. Each refresh cycle (monthly by default) re-checks the businesses, removes closed ones and dead websites, and shows a last-verified date on every listing; a 100-listing directory refreshes for 5 credits. On Brilliant Directories, members keep their own profiles up to date and you manage the members.
  • AI crawlers are allowed on every page.LocusPilot lets AI crawlers in on every directory and publishes an llms.txt file, so the directory is built to be found in Google and in AI answers. Brilliant Directories blocks AI bots on its free hosting until you add the $15-a-month Enhanced Hosting Bundle, although its SEO page calls its sites readable by AI assistants.

Where Brilliant Directories wins

  • The site takes the money.Brilliant Directories runs recurring billing through Stripe, PayPal or Authorize.net, with coupons, free trials, automated invoices, failed-card retry and no platform fee. It can also sell leads to members per lead or in credit packs. LocusPilot takes no payments: you sell featured slots and invoice businesses yourself, so every renewal is your job.
  • Members run their own listings.Visitors register from the member login form, and members keep their listing up to date, with up to 100,000 on the base plan. "Member profiles that don't suck. Subscription management that works," as one Reddit user put it. On LocusPilot you manage every listing; businesses do not log in.
  • You keep your data, and can pay once.Brilliant Directories lets you download a data backup whenever you want; the software itself stays licensed to you and cannot be self-hosted. It still sells a $997 lifetime plan and multi-site lifetime bundles, and you can try a full demo without a card. A LocusPilot directory cannot be exported and stops when the subscription does.

What does year one cost?

Twelve months on each tool's cheapest recurring plan costs $348 on LocusPilot and $1,164 on Brilliant Directories for one directory, at list prices checked on 25 and 26 October 2026. Brilliant Directories also sells one-time lifetime plans, shown in the last column.

ScenarioLocusPilotBrilliant DirectoriesHow we got it
One directory$348 a year$1,164 a year, or $997 onceLocusPilot: $29 × 12. Brilliant Directories: $97 × 12 ($1,344 with AI crawlers allowed); $997 once is the lifetime list price.
Three directories$372 a year$3,492 a year, or $1,950 onceLocusPilot: $29 × 12 + $2 × 12. Brilliant Directories: 3 × $97 × 12; $1,950 once for 3 lifetime sites.

LocusPilot's first build uses no credits; two more 100-listing builds use 30 credits, one month's Operator allowance. Brilliant Directories' lifetime plans are one-time payments at list price, and a 50% code was on its pricing page on 26 October 2026. Over a longer horizon they can cost less: from year three on, ten lifetime sites cost less than ten LocusPilot directories, before add-ons. That holds only while lifetime plans are sold; the pricing page said they are going away.

Who should pick which?

Lead-gen operator, several cities or niches

You want directories that bring in search and AI traffic and earn from the leads they capture, sold to the local businesses listed, or from featured slots. You do not want to manage members or billing.

PickLocusPilot

Paid-membership or community directory

Members join, pay yearly dues and keep their own profile up to date. The site has to bill and renew them, and you are ready to run that community.

PickBrilliant Directories

One long-term directory, paid for once

You plan to run one site for years and would rather pay once. Check that the lifetime plan is still on the pricing page before you plan around it.

PickBrilliant Directories

Moving from Brilliant Directories to LocusPilot

LocusPilot does not import a Brilliant Directories site. It builds a new directory for the same niche and city, so plan for what you keep, what you rebuild and what your paying members lose. Look through a live demo directory before you pay.

Carries over

  • Your niche, city and brand
  • Your domain, once you decide to move it
  • Your data, in the Brilliant Directories backup you download

Rebuilt or dropped

  • The listings, pulled again from Google Business data (the set may differ)
  • Member logins, dues and paid plans (LocusPilot has none)
  • Pages, posts and design you made by hand
  • Old URLs that do not match LocusPilot's page addresses
  1. Download a backup from Brilliant Directories. Its pages disagree on whether member export is included or the Export Member Data add-on, so check before you cancel.
  2. List your pages that get search traffic or backlinks (Search Console shows them) and compare them with the new directory's addresses, so you know which ones will change.
  3. Build the LocusPilot directory for the same niche and city. The wizard shows the credit price first; your first build uses no credits. Compare the two listing sets and switch off any business you do not want shown.
  4. List every member payment the site collects: active subscriptions, renewal dates and what each member was promised. Cancel those subscriptions in Brilliant Directories before you close the account, settle any refunds you owe, and agree any featured placement afresh, invoiced by you.
  5. Keep the old site live on its own address until you decide on the domain; that means keeping your Brilliant Directories plan ($97 a month) during the overlap. LocusPilot has not published redirect controls for old URLs, so ask before you move the domain.
How we checked: Product and price facts come from the two vendors' own pages: Brilliant Directories' saved on 25 and 26 October 2026, LocusPilot's on 25 October 2026. Customer quotes come from dated Reddit comments and are anecdotes, not a survey. A row's winner is the better option for someone choosing between these two at the starting price; where it depends on the number of sites or the buyer, the row is even. LocusPilot is our product. We did not trial Brilliant Directories beyond its public pages.

Frequently asked questions

Is LocusPilot cheaper than Brilliant Directories?
For one directory, yes: LocusPilot Operator is $29 a month with two directories included, and Brilliant Directories' monthly plan is $97 for one site (prices checked 26 October 2026). Over several years, Brilliant Directories' lifetime plans can cost less, because they are paid once.
Can LocusPilot take payments for listings?
No. LocusPilot sells featured placement, banners and sponsored guides as products you invoice yourself, and it never handles the money. Brilliant Directories bills members on the site through Stripe, PayPal or Authorize.net.
Can I export a LocusPilot directory or get its source code?
No. A LocusPilot directory runs on LocusPilot infrastructure: you cannot download its code or host it elsewhere, and it is suspended if your subscription ends. After that you can still view the leads it captured, but the listings cannot be exported. The single business websites LocusPilot builds can be downloaded, which may be where the confusion comes from.
Does Brilliant Directories block AI crawlers?
On its free hosting, yes: Brilliant Directories blocks AI bots to protect shared resources. They are allowed on the Enhanced Hosting Bundle, listed at $15 a month on 25 October 2026.
Does a new Brilliant Directories site start empty?
No. The Brilliant Directories monthly plan includes 100 instant business records and the lifetime plan 1,000, each published with an AI-written description. More are sold in record bundles, for example 25,000 records for $950 at list price (checked 25 October 2026).
Can I move my Brilliant Directories site to LocusPilot?
Not as an import. LocusPilot builds a new directory for the same niche and city from Google Business data, so member accounts, dues and hand-written pages do not carry over. Keep a Brilliant Directories backup before you cancel.
Is Brilliant Directories' lifetime plan still available?
Brilliant Directories listed it at $997 on 26 October 2026, under a banner saying lifetime plans are going away. Check the pricing page before you plan around it.
